A psychological assessment is a structured process used to better understand an individual's cognitive, emotional, behavioural, and developmental functioning.

An assessment may involve interviews, questionnaires, standardised psychological tests, and information gathered from other relevant sources. The specific assessments used will depend on the reason for the referral and the individual's needs.

At the end of the assessment process, you will receive feedback on the findings and a written report outlining the results and relevant recommendations.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, impulse control, activity levels, organisation, planning, and executive functioning.

ADHD can present differently from person to person and can affect areas such as education, employment, relationships, and day-to-day functioning.

An ADHD assessment is designed to determine whether an individual's experiences and difficulties are consistent with ADHD and to consider other factors that may contribute to these difficulties.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism) is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with differences in social communication and interaction, sensory processing, patterns of behaviour, and restricted or highly focused interests. Autism presents differently in every individual. 

An autism assessment considers an individual's developmental history, current experiences, and patterns of functioning to determine whether their presentation is consistent with autism.

The assessment fee covers the assessment process, relevant testing, feedback, and the written report.

Additional services cost extra.

You can pay for the assessment in cash, bank transfer, or revolt.

An assessment can provide greater understanding and awareness of yourself, including your strengths, challenges, and the factors that may be contributing to difficulties in everyday life.

A formal diagnosis may also help you access appropriate supports and accommodations in education and other settings.

For example, students may potentially benefit from educational supports such as:

RACE – Reasonable Accommodations at the Certificate Examinations

RACE provides eligible students with reasonable accommodations during State Certificate Examinations, such as the Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate examinations.

DARE – Disability Access Route to Education

DARE is a higher-education admissions scheme for students whose disability has had a significant impact on their education. Eligible students may be considered for reduced-points places at participating higher-education institutions.

HEAR – Higher Education Access Route

HEAR is an admissions scheme for students who have experienced socio-economic disadvantage and may provide access to reduced-points places and additional college supports for eligible students.

Eligibility for these supports is determined by the relevant organisation. It is important to note that receiving a diagnosis does not automatically guarantee access to a particular accommodation or admissions scheme.

I can not prescribe medication. As a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, I can conduct assessments and provide a diagnosis of ADHD. 

If you are seeking medication, I currently work with psychiatrists who provide medication assessments for adults‍. This service is not currently available for adolescents.

A psychiatric assessment can help with medication decisions and may also provide additional clinical information to support the validity of the diagnosis.

The psychiatrist would independently determine whether medication is appropriate and would be responsible for prescribing and managing any medication.

This service comes with an additional cost of €300–€600 depending on the complexity of the case.

Yes. As a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland, our reports are accepted by government agencies, including the National Council for Special Education (NCSE), the HSE, the Department of Education, and Tusla – Child and Family Agency.

I see adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18.

Yes. Before the assessment, you will be asked to complete a detailed online questionnaire.

You will also be asked to provide copies of any relevant reports or documentation from other professionals, where available. This may include:

• Previous psychological reports

• Occupational therapy reports

• Speech and language reports

• School reports

• Educational assessments

• Previous medical or psychiatric reports

Providing this information in advance helps ensure that the assessment can consider your developmental and personal history as comprehensively as possible.

Some components of the assessment can be completed remotely.

The clinical interview and feedback session can be conducted online.

However, components involving cognitive assessment and autism-specific assessment procedures need to be completed in person. The exact format will depend on the assessment being conducted and the individual's circumstances.

The length of the assessment varies depending on the individual and the type of assessment being completed.

The assessment process involves gathering information from questionnaires, interviews, psychological measures, and any relevant previous reports.

Once all required information has been collected and the final payment has been received, the written report will normally be completed within one week.

Once the assessment has been completed, you will receive feedback on the findings. We will discuss the results, answer any questions you may have, and consider recommendations that may be helpful moving forward.

Where appropriate, recommendations may relate to:

• Psychological support or therapy

• Educational accommodations

• Further specialist assessment

• Psychiatric referral

• Strategies for managing difficulties in everyday life

• Additional community or educational supports
